CAR AUDIO HEADUNIT

Building a User-Centric UX for Car Audio and CarPlay Integration

As the UX Designer for Alpine’s car audio head unit, which was among the first to support Apple CarPlay, I focused on creating a seamless, intuitive interface that balanced both Alpine’s and CarPlay’s functionalities. My process began with researching user behavior through methods such as user shadowing to understand in-car interactions and identify key user needs. Based on these insights, I designed wireframes and user flows aimed at simplifying navigation, music control, and messaging to minimize driver distraction.

I prioritized a clear visual hierarchy, ensuring that users could easily switch between Alpine’s native system and CarPlay’s interface. This included optimizing touch interactions, integrating voice commands, and maintaining the Alpine design language across the interface. Throughout the project, I worked closely with the engineering and development teams to ensure that the interface remained intuitive, user-friendly, and safe for drivers, while also embracing the modern capabilities that Apple CarPlay offered.
